Palm Removals / Trimming

Professional Palm removal and Palm trimming in Auckland

Palms add a touch of the tropics to any garden, and Palms in Auckland thrive in the local climate. For this reason, Palms often grow too big for the space and start to cause problems.

What are the signs that your palm might be a problem?

Palms are often planted close to the house or in small spaces, and as they grow, they may create issues, including:

Palm trunks pushing against retaining walls or paths creating an uneven surface or destabilizing footings.
Palms planted in small gardens pushing beyond the garden wall resulting in the swelling of fixtures .
Palms blocking light into windows and rooms, creating damp curtains or blinds, and wet windowsills.
Heavy seed pods and palm fronds may drop on cars and gardens, causing damage on impact or a safety risk with toxic spikes attached to the fronds.
Providing shelter for pests and vermin eg., rats and pigeons in Phoenix Palms.

When Should You Get Your Tree’s Trimmed?

When Should You Get Your Tree’s Trimmed?

Moldy curtains and slippery paths are an indication of plenty of shade. Take a good look around and if you have a tree that is blocking valuable winter sunlight from getting through, then a good selective tree pruning could make all the difference to the outside and inside of your property. In Auckland, thinning trees and lifting the canopy can have an impact on mold growth. Fruit trees are a huge asset to have for any homeowner, and for schools and businesses alike. They do require some special care and knowledge, as the correct pruning will make a considerable difference on the size and abundance of your fruit. It is important to know if your tree produces fruit from last season’s growth, as removing too much of this will mean less fruit for next season.

Why can removing Palms be difficult or dangerous?

Palms are not trees but instead are part of the grass family. They do not behave like a tree when being removed. There are many risk factors to consider when removing a Palm, including:

  • Toxic thorns and spikes hidden in the fronds
  • Dense and fibrous trunks do not cut easily
  • Trunks can be very heavy and require careful management to ensure damage is minimized when reducing and removing them
  • Palm sap can be corrosive to chainsaw mechanisms
  • Narrow spaces require controlled removal

Can a home gardener prune a Palm?

Palms don’t grow in the same way trees do, and the fronds won’t grow back if you just remove half of them, as a branch might have fresh growth after it’s lost half of its original size.

You can, however, tidy them up by removing all the dead or dying fronds, and this can make a massive impact on how your tree looks. Removing old seed pods can also improve the way your Palm looks.

Palm tree trimming is best done by an Arborist, as the fronds can have toxic thorns. Removing the fronds at the base of the attachment point is crucial, as cutting into the trunk could compromise the plant’s health.

Removing dead palm fronds will also reduce the protection these dead fronds can provide for vermin to shelter and breed in.

I recently had “The Treeman” team remove 4 large trees and raise the canopy on a Totara. I found them to be pleasant, well mannered and very professional. They cleaned up the yard when they had finished and put back garden ornaments etc, they even mulched an old pile of tree cuttings that were laying in my yard. Nothing was too much effort. I will not hesitate in referring them to others in the future.
