Our Tree Planting Process

We understand that successful tree planting is more than simply putting a sapling in the ground. Our meticulous process ensures the best possible start for your new trees:

  • Consultation and Site Assessment: Our knowledgeable arborists will visit your property to discuss your goals, assess the site conditions, and recommend tree species that are well-suited to your specific environment. We consider factors such as size at maturity, growth rate, root system, and impact on the environment, eg, proximity to retaining walls or a pool, etc.

  • Species Selection: With our extensive knowledge of native and exotic tree species suitable for the Auckland climate, we provide expert advice on selecting the right trees for your needs. Whether you’re looking for shade, privacy, fruit, ornamental value, or to attract native wildlife, we’ll help you make an informed decision on what type of tree to use.

  • Soil Preparation: Proper soil preparation is crucial for establishing healthy trees. Some soil may need enrichment with compost and fertilizer or additives to allow for better drainage. in heavy or clay-dominant soil. Amending heavy or clay-dominant soils with sand or gypsum may be needed in some cases to improve aeration.

  • Careful Tree Sourcing: We can access specialized nurseries not open to the public to source high-quality, healthy trees that are well-suited to the Auckland environment and free from pests and diseases.

  • Professional Planting Techniques: Our experienced team utilizes best-practice planting techniques to ensure proper planting depth and root ball handling. We take meticulous care to avoid damaging the delicate root system and ensure the tree is planted at the optimal level for healthy growth. Where needed, we may also add a nutrient boost to help the tree rapidly establish a good root system.

  • Pruning: When planting, we will prune where necessary for the future health of the tree. crossing branches or unions that are too sharp. Early formative pruning is very effective in creating the shape you want and minimizing energy being directed into limbs that will eventually need to be removed.

  • Staking and support: Some newly planted trees may need support. Staking these trees will be critical for the tree to thrive. Constant movement will disrupt the roots in a freshly planted tree as it tries to establish a strong support system and healthy feeder roots. The correct placement and installation of the stakes will determine the effectiveness of the support.

  • Mulching: We can apply a layer of mulch around the base of the tree to help retain moisture and moderate soil temperature. It will also suppress weeds so they do not compete with the tree for nutrients and moisture.

Planting specialists

Planting trees and hedges in Auckland and North Waikato isn’t as simple as digging a hole and dropping in a plant. Our region presents a unique set of challenges that demand expert knowledge and careful execution. Plants can be expensive, so good planting practices will greatly increase the chances that your trees and hedges will survive and thrive for long-term success in your garden.

With your vision and our understanding of plant biology and behavior, as well as our professional skills, we can see that vision through to a reality. Let us help you cultivate a thriving landscape that adds value, privacy, protection, and visual appeal to your property.

Common planting mistakes

  • Planting too deeply: Any plant can die from planting it too deep. Tree roots require oxygen for respiration. The deeper the roots, the less oxygen is available.

  • Suffocation of the root flare. This is the part of the trunk that transitions from the trunk and flares out to the base of the roots. Burying above this point may lead to collar rot.

  • Mulching too close to the trunk. This may keep the root collar permanently damp and can lead to decay of the bark and rot.

  • Planting too proud. Planting not deep enough means that the roots may be exposed and could suffer from a lack of moisture, erosion, and compromised feeder roots.

  • Poorly drained soil. Digging a hole that only just fits the plant in clay soil effectively makes a bucket where water can collect at the bottom. Always dig a much bigger hole than you need and add a drainage medium where necessary.

  • Staking ineffective. Attaching stakes too tightly can rub the trunk and cause damage. Staking too loosely does nothing for support, and not staking on multiple sides could mean a leaning tree.

  • Competing grass. Grass can compete with newly planted trees for nutrients and moisture.

  • Lack of water. Plants can go through a degree of transplant shock, so correct watering is imperative.

I recently had “The Treeman” team remove 4 large trees and raise the canopy on a Totara. I found them to be pleasant, well mannered and very professional. They cleaned up the yard when they had finished and put back garden ornaments etc, they even mulched an old pile of tree cuttings that were laying in my yard. Nothing was too much effort. I will not hesitate in referring them to others in the future.
