Watering during dry spells

Watering during the dry spells

Although we have had plenty of rain so far, summer ground conditions can become dry very quickly, and while established trees are tougher than most garden plants, they can still suffer from prolonged dry conditions. Young trees, recently planted trees, and shallow-rooted species are especially vulnerable during hot spells.

Managing the moisture levels in your soil will make a huge difference to the health of your trees over summer. Deep watering is far more effective than frequent light watering.

A slow soak once or twice a week allows moisture to penetrate deeper into the soil where roots can access it, rather than evaporating from the surface. Early morning or evening watering helps reduce water loss and avoids unnecessary stress on the tree.

Applying mulch around the base of trees is another simple but powerful step. Organic mulch, such as wood chips or bark, helps retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and protect roots from heat. Keep mulch clear of the trunk to avoid rot and pest issues.

Signs of drought stress include wilting leaves, early leaf drop, scorched edges, or sparse growth. If you notice these symptoms, increasing water intake and seeking advice early can prevent long-term damage.

Healthy hydration early helps trees withstand summer heat, reduces pest vulnerability, and supports strong growth later in the season.
